- Why is the HD version missing on some videos?

YouTube only generates the 1280×720
maxresdefaultimage for videos uploaded at 720p or higher. Older and lower-quality uploads simply do not have one, so that card is hidden rather than shown broken. - Can I use these images?
- The thumbnail belongs to whoever uploaded the video. This tool just fetches the public image — it does not grant you any rights to it. Fine for reference, previews and research; check before republishing.
- Does the link get sent anywhere?
- No. The video ID is parsed in your browser and the images load straight from YouTube's image servers. Nothing about this page's use reaches us.
